New house prices are starting to rise, two of Britain's biggest builders claimed yesterday.

Taylor Wimpey said its average selling price was now £177,670, almost 10% up on the first six months of the year.

A pick-up in sales had encouraged the firm to start building on another 22 sites, taking the total to 317.

And boss Pete Redfern said they expected prices to rise further as orders picked up next year.

At the same time Redrow said its reservations were up by almost half in the past 18 weeks compared to the same time last year and cancellation rates had returned to normal levels.
